Curved and Tapered Zinc Panels Highlight Canadian Subway Entrance Pavilion

The new Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Subway Stationis truly an artistic jewel on Toronto Transit Commission’s (TTC) Spadina Subway Extension. One of six new facilities on the route, the station offers intermodal transit services and rapid subway connection to downtown Toronto.

The curvilinear design of the main entrance pavilion creates a futuristic appearance for the structure. The design offers a column-free interior environment with high ceilings and bright open spaces that allow daylight to penetrate deeply into the station.

Highlighting the exterior design is a standing seam roof that brings the structure to life. Approximately 12,000 square feet of Rheinzink Classic bright rolledpanels clad the curved roof of the impressive building. The roof offers high solar reflectance and combines with significant sustainable initiatives throughout the project. The station exceeds Canada’s National Energy Code requirements for energy performance by 40 percent and meets sustainability standards comparable to those required for LEED Silver certification.

More than 1,000 uniquely tapered panels were fabricated by Rheinzink distributor Agway Metals Inc. at its facility in Exeter, Ontario. “No two panels are alike,” says Paul MacGregor, estimator. “Each panel had an individual taper and length. We fabricated the panels using our CNC turret, which was key to achieving the exact taper for each panel right down to the millimeter.”

Providing precise panel specifications to Agway Metals was the installer, Bothwell-Accurate, of Mississauga, Ontario. It was a demanding process, according to Trevor McGrath, Bothwell’s estimating manager for cladding. “We used a 3-D scanner on the roof structure and then utilized Radius TrackCorporation to design the curved framing system that went on top of the roof structure,” McGrath notes. “The Rheinzink panels were thenapplied on that. Radius Track confirmed the skin model of the 3-D structure for us and then computer-flattened it so that we could begin doing sheet design and layout. The flattened model gave us critical dimensions regarding panel lengths and widths.”

The panels were curved on site by Bothwell-Accurate using Agway’s Schlebach machine. “We did a sheet stagger at the beginning of the installation with the two panel lengths, which then allowed us to stagger all of the joints which is recommended,” McGrath says.

Bothwell-Accurate has considerable experience in installing zinc.“We’re very familiar with how to form and work with the natural metal,” McGrath states. “The architects wanted an ‘old school’ appearance with hammered seams and the manner in which the flashings and counter-flashings were done. There was a painstaking amount of detailing done around the 46 skylights in the roof. Each one required custom attention. We had productions crews on the job getting the panels down and then finishing crews crafting the detail work.”

Design for the station was a collaboration of Grimshaw Architectsand Adamson Associates Architectsin conjunction with ARUP Canada.

Goals of the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre included encouraging greater use of public transportation, facilitating efficient transfers between modes of transportation, as well as creating an interesting aesthetic experience. The domed entrance pavilion integrates a mirrored ceiling art installation by Paul Raff Studio designed tocapture the drama of moving passengers and changing light conditions.

Juan Porral, partner at Grimshaw Architects, summed it up this way: “We are always looking for opportunity to create high-quality places with real character. By elevating a functional building to something artful and full of life that people will remember and enjoy, we can have a greater impact on urban space and user experience.”

A standing seam metal roof comprised of zinc panels was the natural choice to clad the roof of a new cottage located in the North Woods of Wisconsin. Approximately 2,500 square feet of RHEINZINK Double Lock Standing Seam Panels met the owner’s criteria. “The multi-level roof was a key part of the design and we wanted it to blend into the environment as much as possible,” the owner says. “You won’t find another material that looks as natural and exquisite as RHEINZINK.”

The prePATINA blue-grey panels were fabricated by RHEINZINK systems partner Sheet Metal Supply (SMS), Mundelein, Illinois. The installation team was led by Lou Rondeau of Natural Metal Associates, Mont Vernon, New Hampshire. Rondeau is an experienced zinc craftsman and instructor in fabrication techniques. He was assisted by Craig Hardin of Hardin Construction, Union Bridge, Maryland, and Chad Wolbert of W&W Construction, Williamsport, Maryland. The three men were on the job for five days. The general contractor on the project was Rod Flohr Construction, LLC, Tomahawk, Wisconsin.

“Rondeau did a fantastic job on the installation, including some beautiful detailing,” the owner says. He specifically mentioned the crescent seams at the eaves. “It’s a designer detail,” according to Rondeau. “Most guys will do a straight up and down 90-

degree edge. But we like to spend a little extra time on the detailing and seaming. RHEINZINK can last a lifetime so it’s important to make the appearance as classic and timeless as possible. I really like working with the qualities and craftsmanship associated with it.”

Overall, the job was relatively straightforward, according to Rondeau. “The greatest challenge was getting to the site in the North Woods,” he says. “But the cottage turned out to be a real gem in that wilderness environment.”

Plazit Polygal, a producer of polycarbonate building materials, has launched Topgal, a modular range of translucent roofing material that is attractive, economic, flexible and easy to install.

Suitable for any building that requires natural light, the Topgal range can be used everywhere—from sports stadiums and commercial buildings to domestic structures, such as pool enclosures.

Produced in five different colors—bronze, blue, clear, ice and polyshade silver—delivering different levels of light transmission, the Topgal sheets come in a variety of sizes and thicknesses to meet the most demanding needs. Although the Topgal system is translucent, all damaging UV rays are filtered out while heat transference is limited.

Durable and weather-resistant, the system, which consists of the panels and a number of connectors, edge protectors and fasteners, can be installed with a screwdriver.

Roofinox America Names Vice President of Sales

David H. Rowe, a 28-year veteran of the metal roofing and wall panel industry, has been named vice president of sales for Roofinox America Inc., a supplier of quality Roofinox stainless steel coil, featuring mechanical properties and an architecturally distinctive matt finish for rollformed roofing panels.

Rowe joins Roofinox from Englert Inc., an American manufacturer of metal and aluminum roofing and wall panel coil, where he was director of product management responsible for the planning, development and introduction of all new products.

At Roofinox America, Rowe will be responsible for the direction and management of all sales and business development operations, including distribution and fabricator and installer relations for the Roofinox stainless steel product line; Roofinox Classic, a brush-rolled material designed for roofing and wall cladding; Roofinox Plus 0.0157, a ribbed surface material for smoother roofing results and economy; and Roofinox Terne-Coated with a tin-plated surface that develops a matt grey patina finish over time.

Rowe’s roots run deep in this market. He joined Englert in ’92 as a member of its sales force and since then held a variety of management positions in regional and national sales, project management and product development. During his career, he was responsible for the development and launch of more than 30 roofing and wall panel products and programs and several strategic partner alliances for related materials.

Among his responsibilities at Roofinox will be the development of alliances with distributors and metal wholesalers, leading manufacturers for roofing and wall-cladding panels and sheet metal workshops—all looking for Roofinox stainless steel’s combination of high longevity with a dull surface without artificial coating. This natural metal was developed in Europe especially for roofing and wall cladding.

Rowe also brings to Roofinox a proven track record for creating, developing and completing architectural detailing and material specifications for high-end commercial, institutional, and residential projects, and will be responsible for counseling, assisting and training customers, including designers, specifiers and roofing contractors.

He is well-known in the roofing fabrication and contracting industry and early on in his career was associated with Bass Associates, a Massachusetts-based contracting company, installing metal roofing and wall panels.

Clamps Accommodate Metal Roof Panels With a Horizontal Seam

S-5! introduces two clamps for metal roof panels. The S-5-H clamp was developed to securely and cost-effectively accommodate metal roof panels with a horizontal seam. The S-5-H allows for attachment to a horizontal seam on the vertical leg of the seam.

The clamp’s two-piece design allows it to be installed anywhere along the length of the rib, simplifying installation. Just place the clamp on the seam, slide the insert piece into place and tighten the setscrews. After the clamp is installed, affix ancillary items using the top stainless steel bolt provided. The S-5-H can be used with the S-5! ColorGard snow retention system and other heavy-duty applications.

The S-5-H Mini is a bit shorter than the S-5-H and has one setscrew rather than two. The mini can be used for attaching a variety of rooftop accessories, including signs, walkways, satellite dishes, antennas, rooftop lighting, lightning protection systems, solar arrays, exhaust stack bracing, conduit, condensate lines and mechanical equipment. S-5! mini clamps are not compatible with S-5! SnoRail/SnoFence or ColorGard snow retention systems.
