3-D Printing Technology Project Will Be Presented at METALCON

The international event for the metal construction industry showcases a 3-D printing technology project developed by the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and industry partners at METALCON’s annual tradeshow and conference on Oct. 26 at the Baltimore Convention Center.
               
As part of its focus on technology this year, METALCON is featuring ORNL’s Additive Manufacturing Integrated Energy (AMIE) project.  AMIE demonstrates innovation through additive manufacturing, or 3-D printing, addressing electricity supply and reliability challenges via an integrated approach to power generation, storage and consumption.   
               
AMIE connects a natural gas-powered hybrid electric vehicle with a building, both printed a polymer 3-D printer.  Power flows between the vehicle and building using a bi-directional wireless power transfer technology developed by ORNL.  The structure’s 3.2-kilowatt solar panel system, paired with the electric vehicle’s batteries, generates and stores renewable power.   It is a model for systems that link buildings, vehicles and the grid, offsetting power supply disruptions.
                
In addition, AMIE exemplifies additive manufacturing’s prototyping potential in design, manufacturing and construction technologies, which will enable products to go-to-market quickly and reduce the amount of waste generated by traditional construction methods.  
               
Dr. Roderick Jackson, the technical lead for AMIE and the building envelope systems research group leader at ORNL, is a guest speaker at METALCON.  Jackson, who has a background in construction, will present the “Future of Design and Technology Trends in Construction” followed by a guided tour of AMIE in the exhibit hall.  He will explain multiple uses of this technology combined into one project and discuss the potential of integrated design, build and energy efforts.
            
“The folks at METALCON and the Metal Construction Association (MCA) understand the concept and recognize the innovation AMIE presents and how this technology could apply to the metal construction industry,” said Jackson.

“The idea behind this prototype is to introduce disruptive innovations to the construction industry.  Although AMIE is constructed from polymer composites, we can explore how to apply this technology to the metal construction industry.” 
               
“We brought together expertise from multiple research teams, along with 20 industry partners including 100 individuals, and the U.S. Department of Energy,” said Jackson.  “We took the risk to demonstrate how it can be done.  We went from a sketch on a restaurant receipt after a dinner meeting to a final product demo in nine months.  We will discuss not only how it was done, but also what prototyping means for the future of the construction industry.”
                 
“We want to know what innovations we can implement today to prepare the metal construction industry for the future,” said Jackson.  “Perhaps there is a challenge in the industry we can help overcome using additive manufacturing or integrated energy technologies.”

METALCON Show Director, Claire Kilcoyne, is excited to showcase AMIE in the exhibit hall.  “We have an opportunity to create an interactive learning experience for our attendees by connecting our educational program to the exhibit hall with this added attraction,” said Kilcoyne.  “This 3-D printing technology offers benefits to the metal construction industry.”

Brightsmith LLC Offers Post-Painting Services

BRIGHTSMITH LLC has announced that post-painting services are now being offered, in addition to coil coating.
 
In April of this year, BRIGHTSMITH acquired the assets of CMF Limited in Trenton, N.J.  Now known as BRIGHTSMITH, this facility will offer post-painting.  PVDF, powder and polyesters are a few of the coatings used for building products.  BRIGHTSMITH also coats rims for military vehicles, railings, lawn furniture and swimming pool parts. 
 
Jim Bus, president of BRIGHTSMITH LLC, stated “Post-painting is a cost effective way to offer a variety of colors for small projects, giving the architects and building owners creative freedom.  Perforated and/or welded products, extrusions, copings and fabricated panels are just some of the items that can be post-painted.  In addition to offering this service, we are fortunate that many of the former CMF employees stayed on in the transition, including plant manager, Keith Schultz.  Their years of experience will ensure a quality painted product for our customers.”
 
BRIGHTSMITH’s coil coating facility, located in Morrisville, Pa., continues to provide pre-painting and laminating of metal coils, and now offers rail service.  With the advantage of greater weight capacities and less waste, the added rail service increases efficiency and reduces customers’ costs.  The environmentally friendly transportation also reduces truck traffic (one rail car is equivalent to four tractor trailers).

METALCON Partners with America’s Fund to Support Ill and Injured Veterans

The metal construction industry’s international event for metal construction products, technologies and solutions gives back to the local community during its annual tradeshow and conference taking place October 26-28, at the Baltimore Convention Center.

METALCON has partnered with the America’s Fund.  The program was created to direct needed resources and financial support to injured and critically ill members of the U.S. Armed Forces along with their families, and is a self-funded program of the Semper Fi Fund (SFF).

Last year, METALCON raised $10,000 at its 25th anniversary celebration in Tampa to provide rehabilitative care to service members treated at the Tampa Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center.  This year, METALCON’s giving back program continues to benefit the America’s Fund and will raise money for military veterans in need of adaptive home support services throughout the Baltimore area.
 
According to the SFF, wheelchair-bound service members and those with catastrophic injuries require adaptive housing, and handicap modifications that are costly but necessary.  To ease the financial strain, the SFF provides funding toward the cost of service members’ homes, depending on the need.  It also grants assistance to those who have fallen behind on their housing payments due to injury, recovery and rehabilitation costs with the goal of helping wounded service members remain in their homes without the added financial burden of these extra costs.

“Semper Fi Fund is committed to being there for our wounded, injured and ill service members for not only their journey to recovery, but for a lifetime,” said Karen Guenther, president, Semper Fi Fund.  “Thanks to the generosity of METALCON, we’ll be able to help provide families with home adaptations to ease in their transition and help them live their fullest lives.”

Metal Construction Association is Accepting Triumph Award Nominations

The Metal Construction Association (MCA) is accepting nominations for its Triumph Awards, a way to honor the people and companies that champion the metal construction industry each year.

The annual MCA Triumph Awards honors individuals and organizations throughout the metal construction industry, from academia to entrepreneurs, from marketing to research. The nomination form can found on the Triumph Awards webpage on the MCA website. An individual, business or organization can make nominations. Nominations will be accepted in six categories.

Industry Champion of the Year Award: An individual from any position within the metal construction industry that has championed the industry and has had an overall impact on advancing the industry. The nominee could be from academia, code driven, marketing driven, or any area that has benefited the overall industry.

Industry Young Movers and Shakers Awards: For those under 35 who are up and coming in the industry and should be recognized as someone to watch. Multiple winners are possible.

Industry Media Executive / Journalist of the Year Award: Recognizing someone from the media who has made an impact on our industry through media and journalism.

Industry Sales Person of the Year Award: Recognizing a sales professional who has impacted on their company.

Entrepreneur of the Year: Recognizing an individual who was the original founder of a company in our industry (contractor to manufacturer to building system) who has who has built a successful company.

Corporate Citizen of the Year: A company that has shown commitment to bettering the world outside of their normal business through their involvement and dedication to a cause or charity.

Nominations are open to the public and will be judged by a 10-person committee. The judging committee will consist of members from a variety of groups including members from the Metal Construction Association (MCA), Metal Building Manufacturers Association (MBMA), Metal Building Contractors and Erectors Association (MBCEA), National Frame Building Association (NFBA) as well as at-large volunteers.

The awards will be presented at a marquee event designed to celebrate honorees at METALCON, October 26, 2016 in Baltimore, Maryland.

The idea for the commendation was initiated by Keith Lipps, vice president of Marketing and Sales from MCA member company, S-5!. “So many people do great things everyday at various levels in their career using many different skill sets, and it’s their achievements that make this industry thrive,” said Lipps. “We want to celebrate these contributions with a premier award because it’s everyone working together that makes us strong.”

Event Details for MCA Metal Roofing Championship Games

Celebrating its 3rd Annual metal roofing challenges to be held at Metalcon October 26 and 27 in Baltimore, MD, the MCA Metal Roofing Championship Games Task Force finalizes event details.

This year, there will be five challenges each day under the appropriately named theme; “Battle Stars Over Baltimore” in recognition of our Star Spangled Banner birthplace. Each day, 5 teams with 2 contestants each will compete to split a $500 cash award in each of the challenges, or $2,500 total each day. In addition to these cash awards, there will be a Grand Prize each day of $500 to the team that has accumulated the most points collectively from the 5 challenges. This represents a total of $6,000 being awarded over the course of the two-day competition.

The Challenges with each of their sponsoring MCA Members are as follows:

1. The Triangle Fastener Corporation “Screw Gun Challenge”, where contestants install a series of self-drilling fasteners into a structural zee-shaped purlin member. Fastest time, alignment and properly seated fasteners will determine the winning team.

METALCON 2016 to Present Ideas for Metal in Construction

Learning opportunities at METALCON 2016 offer an extraordinary look at the future while presenting ideas to improve today’s safety, productivity, communication and the finished project.

As part of this year’s show from Oct. 26-28 at the Baltimore Convention Center, METALCON is offering two unique general sessions featuring 3-D technology. On Oct. 26, Roderick Jackson from Oak Ridge National Laboratories demonstrates how a natural gas-powered hybrid vehicle and a solar-powered house are linked to create an integrated energy system ―both built using large-scale 3-D printers. On Oct. 27, architect and innovator Adam Kushner takes this type of 3-D additive manufacturing to another step demonstrating how it’s used in building projects and why it could soon become mainstream.

METALCON Show Director Claire Kilcoyne is thrilled to have these speakers on board. “We’ve heard about combining new technologies but now see that it’s real,” says Kilcoyne. “Companies in our industry have always been on the leading edge and with this technology, can evaluate other high-tech applications.”

The 45-minute sessions following the general sessions demonstrate existing applications of this technology, along with ideas for better management, marketing, products and techniques to improve metal buildings.

Metal construction experts discuss best practices and attributes of metal roofs, windows, wall panels and building inspections. Rob Haddock, Metal Advisory Group, deals with the reality of “The Roof: The Greatest Asset (or pain-in-the asset) to the Building.” Bob Zabcik of NCI talks about “Choosing Wall Panels for Sustainability and Energy Efficiency,” and Adam Verstraete of Wintech and Rick Kincy of Dominion Building Products offer new insight on a common building aspect in “Window Options for Metal Buildings Are Changing.” The big picture for all metal building projects is presented in “Metal Building Inspection – Don’t Get Caught Off Guard,” an interactive session with an expert panel led by Dustin Cole of Ruffin Building Systems.

Two programs kick-off before METALCON opens. The first is a unique offsite tour on Oct. 25, at Intertek Building & Construction’s testing laboratory in York, Penn. This is a once-a-year chance to see product testing firsthand and learn more about testing and certification. The second is the Metal Roof Certification Training Program, which runs on October 25 and 26. Participants in this 8-hour session will have practical, hands-on training based on the Metal Construction Association’s Metal Roof Installation Manual, and become certified in proper methods of metal roof installation. Industry experts from 275 companies exhibit the latest products and technology while sharing their knowledge with attendees. MCA Presents Awards to Three Outstanding Achievers in the Metal Construction Industry

The Metal Construction Association (MCA) presented awards to three outstanding achievers in the metal construction industry at its winter meeting held in St. Pete Beach, Fla.

Mark James of Roof Hugger Inc. and Randy Allen from Triangle Fastener Corp. were honored with MCA’s Patrick R. Bush Volunteer Service Award, and Ken Buchinger of NCI Building Systems was honored with MCA’s Larry A. Swaney Award.

With 38 years in the metal construction industry, Allen was acknowledged for championing the creation of the MCA Accessories Council, which he is now serving as chair. He was also recognized for his involvement in numerous other MCA committees, councils and initiatives including assisting with the demo area at METALCON, helping to facilitate the Metal Roofing Championship Games, and coordinating MCA’s golf outings.

Credited with completing more than 30 million square feet of retrofit roof projects in his career, Mark James was appreciated for his work in planning, constructing and operating the MCA demo area at METALCON. He was also recognized for being the primary individual responsible for the Metal Roofing Championship Games for the past two years, as well as actively volunteering on the council level.

With more than 40 years in the metal construction industry, Ken Buchinger was honored for serving on the MCA Board from 2006-14, as well as his contributions in technical research for the association. Buchinger’s work led to many key initiatives that benefited the metal construction industry, including MCA’s Metal Roof Service Life Project and its Spray Foam Research Project. He has been an ambassador for education and training and a primary contributor to MCA’s Roofing Installation Manual.

METALCON Celebrates Its 25th Anniversary

True to its 25-year record of being a great place to introduce new products, METALCON drew eager buyers to see all the new offerings from more than 260 exhibiting companies.

“Celebrating METALCON’s 25th anniversary in Tampa gave us a great setting to celebrate the accomplishments within our industry. Best of all, the exhibiting companies had great responses from attendees. These companies expressed their satisfaction with this year’s show by signing up for next year. We already have 55,000 square feet of space committed for 2016 in Baltimore. This has been a great location for us so we’re looking forward to a repeat of our very successful 2008 event held at the Baltimore Convention Center,” notes METALCON Show Director Claire Kilcoyne.

METALCON is the metal construction industry’s largest international tradeshow and conference for metal construction products, technologies and solutions. The 25th annual event took place Oct. 14-16 at the Tampa Convention Center in Tampa, Fla.

Quality and consistency of attendees were bywords for many exhibitors at the 2015 show, such as Bo Newman, business development manager for D.I. Roof Seamers, Corinth, Miss., who says: “METALCON has always been a top trade show for us and this year was no exception. Our booth was filled with visitors throughout the show. The contacts we made were not only record breaking in number, but they were clearly buyers. The vast majority of them are all about business—seriously intent on putting our products and services to work for them.”

He adds: “In addition to our own marketing efforts, we took full advantage of METALCON’s great marketing tools. We participated in the MCA Roofing Championship Games, as well as the “Association at Work for You” area. This added exposure was key in the overwhelming response to our new products—particularly the new D.I. Curver 1000 and Cap Bender. These machines are used to field form a radius on common snap-lock panels with narrow batten caps. We look forward to next year’s METALCON where we will once again present the latest innovations in panel seaming technology.”

Larger equipment suppliers, such as AXYZ Automation, also drew crowds. “There was a lot of interest in our PANELBUILDER CNC Router featuring our new software and print head. We saw very strong prospects and generated a lot of business here. METALCON has always been successful for us because many of our suppliers are here and our customers, installers of wall cladding (ACM), are also in abundance at METALCON. Every year this is a good source of business for us. The new PANELBUILDER 16 is the latest combined router and software solution in our company’s CNC router systems for panel fabrication,” says Greg Jenkins, vice president of sales, AXYZ Automation Inc., Burlington, Ontario, Canada.

New metal panel systems were also a big hit. Ken Gieseke, vice president, marketing, McElroy Metal, Bossier City, La., notes that: “Traffic to our booth was consistently good. Our new product, the 138T Shingle Recover System, was a real draw. Our target is the retrofit arena and our product was developed based on studies of the ASV concept. We did a lot of electronic promotion through METALCON’s offerings, as well as industry publications.”

Lee Ann M. Slattery, sales support manager, ATAS International Inc., Allentown, Pa., echoes his comments. “ATAS International had many visitors who were interested in our new Isoleren insulated metal panels. It was a good event at which to announce this new product offering. Participating in the Learning Zones helped ATAS educate contractors on installation details related to flashing. ATAS has participated as an exhibitor at METALCON for the past 25 years. It is where we establish new relationships and meet with customers and suppliers that we have worked with for many years, and we look forward to future shows,” she says.

For some companies, such as software supplier AppliCad, METALCON is primarily an educational opportunity. “Our customer base has access to all kinds of information so their perception is that they don’t need trade shows to make a decision. The U.S. market is critical for us and we feel our role is to educate roofers through these shows. This is the only way to do it and this show was better than I expected. So we’ll be back next year,” says Ray Smith, managing director of AppliCad, headquartered in Melbourne, Australia. AppliCad has developed software for simplified roof modeling in 3-D for roofing and cladding estimating throughout the Americas, Africa, Middle East, Asia and Europe.

Bill Zayas, senior account executive, SnoGem, McHenry, Ill., also had a rewarding experience in educating prospects and showing them new products. “We previewed our Universal Composite Panel System. There’s no better venue than METALCON to introduce this product. Plus, being right by the MCA Roofing Games helped draw the right people to our booth. In an area like Tampa, we were promoting the benefit of our products in solar installations. In fact we had a visitor from Sri Lanka who was interested in standing seam roofing and wanted to know about our clips.” The design of the Universal Composite Panel System (UCPS) 1000 Series incorporates a concealed drainage system and a concealed fastener design.

Kristin Peregoy, marketing manager, New Tech Machinery, Denver, says her company celebrated industry accomplishments this year and is looking forward to doing so next year. “To help mark METALCON’s 25th anniversary, New Tech Machinery and S-5! co-hosted a kick-off party that had a great turn out. Everyone involved in the show had a part in growing the industry in the last 25 years and by partnering together who knows how big it could get. New Tech Machinery has been attending METALCON for many years and it has consistently been our biggest show. Next year is also New Tech Machinery’s 25th anniversary so we’re making great plans for our celebration at METALCON.”

Before the exhibits opened on the first day, that distinctive rumble of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle started the keynote presentation as Clyde Fessler, former vice president of business development for Harley-Davidson Motor Co., rode a Harley into the ballroom, drawing a rousing applause from the audience.

As Fessler reflected on the history of Harley-Davidson and its turnaround, he captured the essence of how communication with customers played a major role, stating that “problems are in the office; solutions are in the field.” Other key points from his presentation were for companies to: be direct about any weaknesses; address the competition squarely; go global if possible; create accessories if that works for the product line; and to remember that marketing people bring the passion and that brings success.

METALCON’s success is based on three key methods of education: exhibits, an extensive education program and interactive, live demos. This year’s conference program included 90-minute classroom sessions focused on what CEOs, presidents and managers need to move their companies forward. Learning Zones offered education inside the exhibit hall in 15-minute sessions with presentations on technical applications and solutions. The live-action MCA Metal Roofing Championship Games held in the exhibit hall drew volunteers from the audience to compete in five different types of challenges involving various metal roofing applications and techniques.

This year METALCON committed its Giving Back Program to America’s Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping U.S. Armed Forces’ veterans and their families. This affiliation allows METALCON to focus its giving back efforts throughout the year on assisting members of the military in all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. Contributions to America’s Fund can be made any time on the METALCON website. Each year a special fund raising drive will be held at METALCON to help a specific America’s Fund program serving veterans in the show’s location that year.

During this year’s 25th anniversary celebration, show management honored companies that helped pioneer METALCON and have remained exhibitors. METALCON Show Director Claire Kilcoyne also received an award, the first annual MCA Triumph Award. These awards honor individuals and companies in the metal construction industry in nine different categories. Claire received the 2015 Industry Champion of the Year Award for spearheading the METALCON show for 25 successful years.

MCA Launches Triumph Awards to Honor Those Who Impact the Advancement of the Metal Construction Industry

The inaugural Triumph Award went to Claire Kilcoyne of PSMJ Resources who was awarded the first Industry Champion of the Year Award for spearheading the METALCON show for 25 successful years.

Future honorees will be nominated by their peers and judged by a 10-person committee. The awards will be presented at a marquee event designed to celebrate honorees with a formal dinner and light-hearted entertainment. “It will be the Academy Awards of the metal construction industry,” says Lipps.

Nominations are open to the public and will be accepted beginning February 2016. The awards event will be held Oct. 26, 2016 in Baltimore. The judging committee will consist of members from a variety of groups, including members from the MCA, Metal Building Manufacturers Association (MBMA), Metal Building Contractors and Erectors Association (MBCEA), National Frame Building Association (NFBA), as well as at-large volunteers.

“We are thrilled to be on the ground floor planning for this awards program,” says Kristin Peregoy with MCA member company, New Tech Machinery. Peregoy has been instrumental in launching the program along with Lipps. “As a new member company of MCA, we wanted to get involved and we couldn’t ask for a more exciting opportunity.”

The MCA Triumph Awards will be given in nine categories:

  • Industry Champion of the Year Award: An individual from any field or position that has made a great overall impact on advancing the metal construction industry.
  • Industry Young Movers and Shakers Awards: For those younger than 35 who demonstrate excellence, creativity and initiative in his or her business or profession.
  • Industry Media Executive / Journalist of the Year Award: A member the media who has made a significant impact on the metal construction industry through media and journalism.
  • Industry Sales Person of the Year Award: A sales professional who has had the greatest impact on their company in the previous 12 months.
  • Entrepreneur of the Year: An individual who was the original founder of a business in the metal construction industry (contractor, manufacturer or building system) who has who has built a successful company.
  • Business of the Year – Contractor, Manufacturer, and Service Provider: A company in each category that has demonstrated achievement and an exceptional previous 18 months.
  • Emerging Business of the Year: A new company in the metal construction industry that has demonstrated achievement and an exceptional previous 18 months.
  • Corporate Citizen – Business of the Year and Individual of the Year: An individual and a company that has shown commitment to bettering the world outside of their normal business through their involvement and dedication to a cause or charity.
  • Marketer of the Year – Business to Business and Consumer: Marketers and their agencies for exceptional integrated marketing campaigns that have promoted their companies with exceptional creative and strategy over the past 12 months.
