Mount Snow-retention Systems and Solar Panels

S-5!’s VersaGard

VersaGard is a strong, versatile and affordable exposed-fastened solution for mounting snow retention and solar panels. It is compatible with almost any trapezoidal, exposed-fastened profile. VersaGard comes with factory-applied butyl sealant already in the base; the S-5!-patented reservoir conceals the sealant from UV exposure, preventing drying and cracks. A VersaGard pipe snow-retention system functions without cluttering the lines of the roof. It also can be used in lieu of an L-foot to support the installation of photovoltaic panels. VersaGard works with most rail or racking systems and can be oriented parallel or perpendicular to the roof line.

A General Contractor Develops a Permanent Fall-protection Anchor Roofing Workers Will Use

The HitchClip’s main function is to provide roofing workers with fall protection.

Scott Fontaine was a general contractor for 30 years. Every day he was finding solutions to problems on job sites, one of which was convincing crews to wear safety equipment. He decided to put his problem-solving skills to work and created equipment that he could field test on the job. It was this entrepreneurial spirit that developed the HitchClip, a versatile and permanent residential fall-protection anchor.

Made from durable and lightweight powder-coated aluminum, the HitchClip is quick and easy to install (with six screws or six nails). Because it may be permanently installed, the HitchClip not only adds value to any home, but also helps reduce costs for contractors by allowing them to save money on temporary or one-use anchor options.

The HitchClip, which is now available for purchase from Qualcraft Industries, a division of Guardian Fall Protection, comes in black, gray or brown, and its sleek design allows it to easily blend in with nearly any roof. Its patented “key-hole” connection point allows it to be used as a standard fall-protection anchor and in combination with numerous attachment accessories, such as Qualcraft’s Bunk Jack, Roof Jack, Guardrails, Workbench, Platform Stage, Solar Panel Rack Bracket and more.

So far, the reaction in the marketplace has been enthusiastic. “The HitchClip system is widely used by contractors and homeowners alike,” Fontaine explains. “The simplicity and ease of use are a big factor, as well as the wide range of components that the system can utilize. There is no system quite like it.”

Inventors, though, can sometimes have a romanticized view of the product they’ve spent so much time developing. However, Justin Quick from Roofline Supply & Delivery, Eugene, Ore., says this is not the case with the HitchClip. “Roofers that I have sold HitchClip to love them,” Quick notes. “I like that they are an inexpensive add-on to an order that your customer will come back for over and over again.”

OMG Roofing Products has introduced the PowerGrip Plus Roof Mount System, a watertight structural attachment used to secure ballasted solar racks and other equipment to roofs covered with TPO and PVC membranes. PowerGrip Plus is designed with wind performance in mind and offers ultimate tensile strength of 2,000 pounds per foot and ultimate shear strength of 1,075 pounds per foot. A wide membrane skirt promotes easy welding in place, and the 15/8 diameter and 1/2-inch-tall mount provides a perch for securing brackets or struts.

Solar Racking System Meets Common Rooftop Challenges

Silverback Solar’s engineering department was able to utilize as much roof space as possible for solar panels by elevating them above HVAC equipment with the Silverback Solar racking system.

A barrel roof with HVAC equipment and skylights is not the ideal platform for a crystalline panel solar system, but a watertight attachment system from Silverback Solar allows architects, engineers and contractors to work with such challenges.

Silverback Solar’s mounting system features a roof attachment system that creates a completely watertight structural mounting point. It also features a patented adjustable sprocket to allow adjustments with the curvature of the roof. The Silverback product is lightweight and durable, which makes the building of the racking easy and faster to install. The ability to adjust the bracing and supports makes the racking very adaptable to varying roof terrains. More importantly, there is no cutting of materials since the racking comes precut and bundled per array, which is also identified per location on the site layout from Silverback.

Each part is labeled alphabetically, so all that is needed is a measuring tape, protractor to confirm the pitch and a 5/16 impact driver to install the self-drilling screws to hold the brackets to the pipe.

Silverback Solar designs, manufactures and distributes engineered racking systems for mounting photovoltaic and solar thermal systems. Solar panel racking systems work on commercial flat and low sloped roofs as well as ground mount applications.

S-5 Announces Metal Plus as New Distributor

S-5!, a manufacturer of ancillary attachment technology for the metal roofing industry, has announced its most recent full-line distributor, Metal Plus LLC.

Metal Plus produces a line of standing-seam brackets designed to simplify temporary staging or scaffolding for metal roofing projects. Because the Metal Plus brackets allow contractors to get to work quickly and safely, they make an excellent platform for installing S-5! products. Pairing these two product lines, roofers, contractors and solar integrators can quickly and cost-effectively attach solar arrays, snow retention systems and other ancillaries to metal roofs without damaging the roof.

Rob Haddock, CEO at S-5!, feels confident the relationship is a good fit for both companies and states: “At S-5! we take innovation, development, thorough testing, and proper market introduction very seriously. We pride ourselves in providing only the best solutions in the metal roofing industry, and I have been impressed with Metal Plus’s commitment to the same.”

According to Mario Lallier, owner of Metal Plus: “We realize that becoming a distributor for S-5! marries two great products, destined to make life for metal roofing installers and contractors much easier. The synergy between metal roofs, S-5! clamps, and Metal Plus brackets equals cost and labor savings upwards of 15 to 25 percent.”
