3M, Atlas Roofing and Mike Holmes Collaborate to Protect the Curb Appeal of Homes

Black streaks caused by algae have been hiding in plain sight on roofs for years. Professional contractor and TV host Mike Holmes is known for insisting on nothing less than the best product for the job and helping homeowners understand what it takes to make it right the first time. Together, 3M, Mike Holmes and his team plan to increase awareness with homeowners to help eliminate black streaks on roofs for good by naming shingles with Scotchgard Protector a HOLMES Approved Product. Atlas Roofing will leverage its relationship with its roofing contractors, including those trained as Scotchgard Protector Shingle Sales Specialists, to help them effectively bring this message to homeowners through a powerful set of marketing tools.

“I’m proud to partner with 3M and I’m excited to see how far we can take the message,” said Mike Holmes, professional contractor and TV host on HGTV and DIY Network. “Together, we’re going to continue to improve the quality of our homes, increase the value of our homes and change our industry for the better.”

This fall, The Holmes Group will partner with two Atlas PRO Plus contractors to transform homes in need of a curb appeal facelift. The teams, led by Mike Holmes Jr. and Sherry Holmes, will work together to make over two homes with Atlas Pinnacle Pristine Shingles with Scotchgard Protector. The Holmes siblings will undoubtedly strike up some friendly competition vying for the best transformation story. Viewers can tune in to the online micro-series later this fall.

“I am excited about this collaboration! I love tackling projects around homes that improve the curb appeal and this is a great fit for our ‘Holmes Approved’ family,” said Sherry Holmes, contractor, TV host and DIYer. Mike Holmes Jr. added, “my dad always says start from the outside in. If you’re taking care of your home that care should include the roof.”

“The Holmes name brings added value to the already highly respected Scotchgard brand,” said Stan Bastek, director of marketing and sales development for Atlas Roofing. “When the Holmes group endorses a brand, they are communicating to consumers that they see the same problem we do: how ugly black streaks on roofs reduce curb appeal and home value. We can’t wait to get to work with Mike, MJ and Sherry to spread the word!”

Invented by 3M to combat black streaks on roofs caused by algae, copper-containing roofing granules have been proven successful on hundreds of thousands of homes across the country over the last two decades. Available as shingles with Scotchgard Protector, this long-term, proven solution provides homeowners a beautiful roof free from ugly black streaks.

“The Scotchgard brand is synonymous with protection for homeowners, so protection from roof algae is the fulfillment of what that brand promises—a roof free of black streaks that retains its aesthetic appearance,” said Frank Klink, Ph.D., senior laboratory manager, 3M Industrial Mineral Products Division. “Our decades of research into the scientific properties of copper, and field experience with shingle technologies and roof algae, has proven a minimum 10 percent blend of 3M copper-containing granules uniformly distributed across the shingle surface, and hip and ridge are all required for superior protection against algae.”

The Holmes Group recognizes that shingles with Scotchgard Protector provide a long-term solution to help prevent algae growth from taking hold. Based on incorporating the prescribed formula into the shingle, and then using third-party testing on each shingle run, that recognition now comes with inclusion on the “HOLMES Approved Product” list.

By addressing the No. 1 appearance-related problem reported to roofing contractors, shingles with Scotchgard Protector help maintain the roof’s appearance and preserve the beauty of the home. This solution, coupled with 3M training to become a Scotchgard Protector Shingle Sales Specialist, gives contractors a real opportunity to connect and add value to the conversation with homeowners. As a recent survey of these participating contractors indicates, 80 percent realized an improvement in their close rates by as much as 10-20 percent.

Homeowners don’t have to accept the fate of a roof looking old before its time due to the black streaks of algae. 3M science, decades of research and more than one million installations have proven that shingles with Scotchgard Protector will protect your home and help keep it looking good for years to come.

Atlas Roofing Partners with Veterans Community Project for Phase Two of Veterans Housing Village

Atlas Roofing Corporation, in partnership with the Veterans Community Project (VCP), will begin Phase Two construction for the Veterans Housing Village in Kansas City, Missouri. The Veterans Community Project’s housing village is a specialized community of 50 tiny homes that provide transitional housing and address the underlying cause of veteran homelessness.

Phase Two of the project officially begins with the Atlas Build Day on August 8. Atlas employees, contracting partners and VCP leaders will be on the site to begin the construction of more than 13 tiny homes, which will be added to the existing neighborhood of finished homes, a community center and resource facility of full-time staff of case managers to assist the veterans. The addition of Phase Two will make more room for homeless veterans, where they can seek rehabilitation, job assistance services, and support from their peers in a safe environment.

“Our partnership with Atlas Roofing has been instrumental in the successful completion of our first veteran village development,” said Brandonn Mixon, co-founder and Chief Project Officer at Veterans Community Project. “Thanks to the high-performance value that the Atlas products offer, I am confident that our residents will stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer while we keep our energy costs low.”

Atlas is collaborating with key partners and volunteers to provide specialized services and on-site contractor support. Partners, including ABC Supply Company and JR Roofing, will be donating time and/or services for the construction. The Build Day event will focus on the installation of Atlas EnergyShield, a foil faced polyiso continuous insulation for residential and commercial exterior walls. Meeting all building standards, the EnergyShield product allows for short term savings and long-term energy efficiencies.

Phase Two of the Veterans Village will consist of 13 tiny homes that will house homeless veterans and assist in their mission to end veteran homelessness. VCP has set a goal to complete Phase Two by Veterans Day 2018 and will rely on the support of the community, donors and volunteers to make this goal a reality. The VCP will work with volunteers on a majority of the hands-on building process so the whole community can get involved. Trade partners will complete mechanical, electrical and plumbing work as needed. During the build process, VCP will also be planning and coordinating Phase Three and Four to complete all 49 homes and the community center in a timely fashion.

Atlas Introduces Free Online Wall Builder Tool

Atlas Roofing Corporation has created the EnergyShield Wall Builder Tool, an industry resource designed for contractors and architects seeking guidance on designing with polyiso wall insulation. The EnergyShield Wall Builder Tool is hosted on the Atlas Roof & Wall Insulation website and allows any user to virtually construct a wall layer by layer. As each layer is chosen, the user can see the wall rendering as it is assembled. Once the user has created a final product, the rendering of the wall assembly becomes available for download, along with the matching specifications and submittal materials.

The EnergyShield Wall Builder incorporates all EnergyShield products, including EnergyShield Pro, a foil faced polyiso continuous insulation product for commercial exterior walls. EnergyShield Pro meets all commercial building requirements: NFPA 285 compliance, Class A flame spread, and a thin wall profile of 4-inch thickness or less. In addition, EnergyShield Pro meets NFPA 286 requirements for exposed interior use. EnergyShield Pro allows for short term savings and long-term energy efficiencies, incorporating an integrated weather and air barrier.

“The EnergyShield Wall Builder Tool was created to speed up the design and submittal process, while helping facilitate creative freedom in building design,” said Tom Robertson, Business Unit Manager for Atlas EnergyShield. “By having millions of possible wall material combinations at their fingertips, architects can more easily envision the possibilities.”

Innovation and Design Freedom for Architects

The EnergyShield Wall Builder Tool grew out of the desire to simplify the building process for customers. Atlas was inspired by similar virtual tools in other industries, like the car builders seen on many automakers’ websites. The Atlas tool gives customers the ability to see their wall as they construct it based on the specific needs of their project, then have the specs and a custom rendering instantly delivered to their email.

The EnergyShield Wall Builder Tool was custom-built from hundreds of digital renderings of wall assemblies and is capable of producing millions of finished combinations. Please visit Atlas online at wall.atlasrwi.com to use the EnergyShield Wall Builder.

Polyiso Wall Insulation Product Line Meets New Model Energy Codes

EnergyShield CGF Pro, glass faced polyiso insulation for commercial exterior walls, helps protect the integrity of the continuous insulation layer.

EnergyShield CGF Pro, glass faced polyiso insulation for commercial exterior walls, helps protect the integrity of the continuous insulation layer.

EnergyShield CGF Pro and EnergyShield Ply Pro are the newest members of the Atlas Roofing Corporation’s commercial polyiso wall insulation line.

EnergyShield CGF Pro, glass faced polyiso insulation for commercial exterior walls, helps protect the integrity of the continuous insulation layer by resisting jobsite damage, particularly in masonry, brick veneer and metal panel assemblies. Additionally, the product offers more vapor permeability than foil-faced insulation, has multiple NFPA fire tested assemblies and is engineered for incorporation into commercial wall assemblies.

EnergyShield Ply Pro is a Class A polyiso wall insulation bonded to plywood for commercial continuous wall insulation systems. The single component provides insulation, together with a fire-treated plywood substrate that can be mechanically fastened to various cladding systems, resulting in fast installations and labor savings. EnergyShield Ply Pro offers the highest R-value per inch of any rigid insulation.

“One of our key priorities is to make Polyiso products easy for designers and installers to use in commercial applications,” said Tom Robertson, EnergyShield bsiness unit manager. “These products are intended to bring design flexibility, R-value and NFPA fire tested assemblies advantages of Polyiso to a wider audience.”

EnergyShield CGF Pro and Ply Pro are available for ordering though an Atlas representative. The EnergyShield line of high performance insulation provides continuous insulation boards for all design, code and efficiency requirements. EnergyShield products are designed and manufactured in eight locations throughout the US and Canada by Atlas Roofing Corporation.
