Retrofit MBI System for Insulating Metal Buildings

rFOIL introduces the Retrofit MBI System for insulating metal buildings. According to the company, the patented clip and pin system combined with rFOIL’s reliable insulation provides a cost-effective and energy-efficient way to insulate all types of metal buildings. The MBI Retrofit clip is installed to the bottom of the exposed roof purlins and inside the wall girts. The system allows for the addition of insulation mass. Stone Wool Insulation Board Is Thermally Efficient, Non-Combustible

HARDROCK (DD) TRB (Thermal Roof Board) is a rigid, dual-density stone wool insulation which is purpose-designed to give an enhanced thermal performance across roofs that are subject to maintenance-only foot traffic. Manufactured using Rockwool’s patented dual-density technology, this A1 non-combustible thermal roof insulation board is ideal for large flat roof areas typically found on storage, logistics and distribution centers, as well as for education, healthcare and residential roofing applications.

“The roof is often overlooked in terms of fire safety, particularly from a regulatory standpoint, which can result in specifiers inadvertently yet routinely introducing a weak link into the building envelope via the unconsidered ‘fifth façade,’” said Will Wigfield, Product Manager at Rockwool. “However, there now exists a non-combustible flat roof insulation capable of meeting stringent thermal requirements in just one layer – offering contractors a quick and easy install without compromising fire safety. HARDROCK (DD) TRB achieves the highest-attainable Euroclass A1 rating under EN 13501-1, meaning that it simply will not burn.”” 

According to the manufacturer, HARDROCK (DD) TRB is easy to handle on site, and in the majority of applications can be securely installed within a mechanically-fixed single-ply waterproofing system using just one fixing per board, in contrast to the multiple fixings needed with PIR / PUR foam board installation. (Note: Exceptions may occur that demand multiple fixings, including, for example, the corner regions of flat roof systems, which are subject to increased external suction and internal pressure force, and require more fasteners.) The result is a quick and simple installation, reducing any risks of cold bridging that may otherwise compromise thermal performance. The product is also compatible with all commonly used flat roof membranes, including single-ply and EPDM, bitumen membranes and liquid-applied systems.

Manufactured from basalt rock, which is melted, spun and bound to create stone wool insulation boards, HARDROCK (DD) TRB is dimensionally stable, eliminating the need for any mechanical fasteners to prevent differential thermal expansion and undue stress on the waterproofing membrane. It is also water repellent and completely unaffected by damage caused by the freeze/thaw cycle, according to the manufacturer.

New Insulation Offers High Thermal Efficiency, Minimal Thickness

Kingspan OPTIM-R Kingspan OPTIM-R is a next-generation insulation comprising rigid vacuum insulation panels (VIP) with a microporous core, which is evacuated, encased and sealed in a thin, gas-tight envelope to give outstanding R-values and an ultra-thin insulation solution. According to the manufacturer, the high level of thermal efficiency — up to R-28 on 1 inch and R-57 on 2 inch using calculated edge thermal resistance properties — combined with minimal thickness, provides an ideal solution for applications where a lack of construction space or depth is an issue, such as commercial roofing for single-ply low slope and IRMA systems.

OPTIM-R panels are accompanied with polyisocyanurate (PIR) insulation infill panels for single-ply systems or XPS insulation infill panels for IRMA systems, which can be cut to fit around problem areas such as sky lights or other roofing penetrations. In retrofit applications, OPTIM-R can provide solutions for areas that previously would have remained un–insulated because of insufficient space available. GAF introduces a new non-halogen polyisocyanurate insulation: EnergyGuard NH Polyiso Insulation Board. According to the company, GAF is the first roofing manufacturer to offer a full line of Red List Free roofing assemblies across their asphaltic and single-ply product lines.

The development of EnergyGuard NH Polyiso Insulation Board demonstrates the GAF commitment to providing architects, contractors, and building owners with affordable products that help them meet their sustainable and environmental design goals, by offering products that do not contain halogenated compounds.

As with their current EnergyGuard Polyiso Insulation, this product line offers high insulating values to help save on energy costs and is available in a variety of thicknesses. VersicoVersico Roofing Systems introduces its VersiCore MP-H NH and SecurShield NH polyiso insulations. According to the manufacturer, these products provide the same performance characteristics as standard polyiso products but contain no halogenated flame retardants. VersiCore MP-H NH and SecurShield NH are Living Building Challenge “Red List Free” with Declare label and product database listing. They are also California Department of Public Health (CDPH) VOC emissions compliant and can contribute toward LEED v4 credit requirements, according to the company.

“VersiCore MP-H NH and SecurShield NH meet all the same performance characteristics of our standard polyiso products, including stringent UL and FM fire testing requirements, without the use of halogenated flame retardants,” said Chad Buhrman, Versico’s Insulation Product Manager. “These new products are Living Building Challenge ‘Red List Free’ and now provide a choice for building owners and specifiers seeking insulation products with no added halogenated flame retardants.”

Kingspan Insulation has expanded its commercial product offering by introducing GreenGuard Type VII XPS Insulation Board, which is designed for high load-bearing engineered applications.Kingspan Insulation has expanded its commercial product offering by introducing GreenGuard Type VII XPS Insulation Board. The product is designed for high load-bearing engineered applications requiring insulation with a minimum compressive strength of 60 PSI. Type VII XPS is primarily used in commercial roofing applications, such as protected membrane and pedestal paver systems.

According to the manufacturer, the insulation board offers an R-value of 5.0 per inch of thickness and meets ASTM C578 Type VII requirements. The product retains its insulating properties over time, has high water resistance and is HCFC-free. In addition to commercial roofing applications, it also is suitable for low-temperature freezer floors, cold-storage facility floors, ice rinks and parking decks.

Polyiso Sump Panel Arrives Ready to Install

Hunter Panels Target SumpTo provide contractors with a faster and easier way to create roof sumps, Hunter Panels introduces its new 4-foot-by-4-foot Target Sump. The polyiso insulation panel is ideal for low-slope applications, ships flat, arrives ready to install and increases the slope around drains to ensure water will flow to the drain instead of ponding.

According to the manufacturer, the Target Sump’s coated glass (CG) facer provides improved dimensional stability, fire performance, resistance to mold growth and is compatible with all major roofing membranes and application techniques.

The new product is Hunter’s second sump panel, extending options beyond the company’s 8-foot-by-8-foot hinged target sump. Both sumps are factory assembled and pre-cut for easy installation. According to the company, they install much faster than cutting insulation on the job site, and eliminate waste, which reduces dumpster fees.

“At Hunter we do whatever it takes to serve our customers,” said Jason Greenleaf, technical & tapered design services manager for Hunter Panels. “Customers asked for a 4-foot-by-4-foot sump option, and we delivered with an innovative product that helps make installation easier, and projects more profitable.”

Rich-E-Board is an insulated composite panel system created by R-50 Systems to provide an insulation alternative for the commercial roofing market. While conventional insulation requires a thickness of 15 inches to reach an R-value of 50, Rich-E-Board achieves the same result at just 1 1/2-inches thick. Rich-E-Board can be installed on most roof deck types and can support all conventional low-slope roof systems. The product recently received a patent for its proprietary Vacuum Insulated Panel—two polymeric foam cover boards that sandwich the panel—and the adhesive ribbons that bind the boards and panel together. Rich-E-Board is cut-to-spec and lightweight, as well as mold and fire resistant.

Firestone Building Products Company LLC has introduced its new formulation of polyiso insulation.
 
The formulation is equipped with a high R-value per-inch in cold temperatures. Firestone polyiso outperforms mineral wool and competing polyiso boards when it comes to both R-value and cost savings. Benefits include:

  • Outperforms the industry standard by up to 18 percent
  • Competing polyiso boards require an additional .25 inches to meet an R25 value at 40F
  • Fewer inches of polyiso translates to cost savings for building owners. A 500,000 square-foot roof can equate up to $40,000 in savings.
  • Polyiso is environmentally-friendly and requires 85 percent less embodied energy to manufacture. Polyiso can also be recycled and reused, while mineral wool cannot.
