Be Recognized for Excellence in Roofing Design

The Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing, Washington, D.C., is accepting entries for its 2013 RoofPoint Excellence in Design Award. The Excellence in Design Award was established in 2003 by the National Roofing Contractors Association, Rosemont, Ill., to recognize professionals who design long-lasting, energy-efficient, environmentally friendly roof systems. In 2008, the center began awarding the Excellence in Design Award.

With the launch of RoofPoint, the center now recognizes design excellence through the RoofPoint program. A description of last year’s award-winning projects is available here.

This year’s deadline for entries is Oct. 31. Roofing contractors, architects, specifiers, manufacturing reps and roof consultants are encouraged to submit a project. Roof systems must have been installed after Jan. 1, 2012, and only RoofPoint Registered Projects are eligible to receive the award.

A panel of roofing industry experts selected by the center will judge applicants. Award winners will be notified by Nov. 30.

Roof Coatings Professionals Tour ORNL

The Roof Coatings Manufacturers Association (RCMA), a national trade association representing manufacturers of cold applied protective roof coatings and cements and suppliers of products to the industry, held its Fall 2013 Meeting in Oak Ridge, Tenn., Oct. 8-10. The meeting commenced with a tour of Oak Ridge National Laboratory followed by two days of committee updates and discussions on technical subject matters, codes and standards, VOC regulations, industry research studies and RCMA’s lobbying efforts.

RCMA members were given the opportunity to tour the facilities at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a multi-program science and technology research laboratory managed for the U.S Department of Energy by UT-Battelle. Attendees learned about flexible research platforms, building envelope roofing research, and buildings supercomputing, and had the chance to tour the recently completed MAXLAB facility and view the X-10 graphite reactor. Tour participants learned about the ongoing initiatives of the Buildings Technology Research & Integration Center (BTRIC) User Facility, which is devoted to the development of technologies that improve the energy efficiency and environmental compatibility of residential and commercial buildings.

“The research being conducted on building envelopes at ORNL will help improve many types of building materials technologies, including roof coatings,” says John Ferraro, RCMA executive director. “The members were thrilled to have the opportunity to hear insight on the future of the industry and how their businesses might be affected going forward.”

The remaining two days of the RCMA Fall Meeting were filled with presentations on the activities of the association and networking opportunities for meeting attendees. More than 30 roof coating manufacturer and supplier companies were represented at the meeting, which featured updates on the activities of the Member Services Committee, Technical Affairs Committee, and Government Affairs Committee.

Topics of interest included discussions on the South Coast Air Quality Management District’s Rule 1168, which regulates volatile organic compound (VOC) content in adhesives and sealants, updates on RCMA research initiatives on solar reflectivity, a strategy session on RCMA government affairs initiatives, and planning discussions for the upcoming 2014 RCMA International Roof Coatings Conference (IRCC).

IKO Launches YouTube Channel

IKO has launched its own channel on the world’s most popular video sharing site, YouTube. According to Director of Marketing, Carol Perkins, IKO has been hard at work on a multi-level marketing program. It’s designed to keep pace with the rapidly changing needs of the company’s consumer, contractor and distributor markets, as well as with current and quickly evolving technology.

“Phase One was to revamp our corporate website to be more interactive and accessible on the go,” she explains. “Now that our new site is up and running, Phase Two–the launch of IKORoof, our proprietary YouTube channel–will become a stand-alone resource, as well as an enhancement to the new website. There’s tremendous synergy to be gained between the two. Embedding videos on our site creates a more interactive experience for our visitors. Homeowners and contractors will find a growing library of instructional videos in English and French on topics ranging from the anatomy of a roofing system to how roofing professionals can grow their businesses. Google loves video, too, so doing this makes sense in terms of search engine optimization. IKO’s YouTube channel can direct viewers back to our website for further information to locate a contractor or distributor.”

IKO is not producing the videos exclusively; contractors and homeowners will be able to upload and share theirs, as well. Such videos might include customer testimonials or business success tips that roofing pros would like to share. “Video is one of the most effective ways that people digest new information. Having our own YouTube channel will give both consumers and contractors the opportunity to learn from a global leader. Our videos will reinforce our credibility as a reputable, responsible company people can come to know, like and trust,” Perkins says.

Visitors to the IKORoof channel on YouTube will be able to share the videos with others on the most popular social media platforms.

Frank Abagnale Will Present Keynote at International Roofing Expo

Frank Abagnale, subject of the blockbuster book and movie, “Catch Me if You Can,” will provide the Keynote Address during the International Roofing Expo, Feb. 26-28, 2014, at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas.

Frank Abagnale is one of the world’s most respected authorities on the subjects of forgery, embezzlement and secure documents. For more than 25 years he has lectured to and consulted with hundreds of financial institutions, corporations and government agencies around the world.

Held immediately prior to the opening of the show, the Keynote Address will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 26, from 9:45 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. in South Pacific E. The Keynote is sponsored by Malarkey Roofing Products, exhibiting in booth #949.

“We are delighted to have the opportunity to hear Frank Abagnale discuss his incredible life story,” says Lindsay Roberts, group director of the International Roofing Expo. “As one of the world’s most respected authorities on preventing fraudulent business practices, his message is compelling, motivating and entertaining.”

His bestselling book, Catch Me if You Can, was released as a major motion picture directed by Steven Spielberg and featured an all-star cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks, Christopher Walken and Martin Sheen.

His rare blend of knowledge and expertise began as a teenager. More than 30 ago, he was known as the “Great Imposter”, one of the world’s most famous professional check writers. He cashed $2.5 million in fraudulent checks in every state and 26 foreign countries over a five-year period. Between the ages of 16 and 21, he successfully posed as an airline pilot, an attorney, a college professor and a pediatrician. Apprehended by the French police when he was 21 years old, he served time in the French, Swedish and U.S. prison systems. After five years he was released on the condition that he would help the federal government, without remuneration, by teaching and assisting federal law enforcement agencies.

Abagnale now lectures extensively at the FBI Academy and for the field offices of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He is a past faculty member of the American Bankers Association’s Security Officers School. More than 14,000 financial institutions, corporations and law enforcement agencies use his fraud prevention programs.

In his second book, The Art of the Steal, Abagnale advises individuals and businesses how to prevent fraud, identity theft, credit card crimes, theft in the workplace, on-line scams, and street crime.

“Frank Abagnale is a truly special speaker to have at our event,” says Bill Good, executive vice president of NRCA, the show’s official sponsor. “I have no doubt that our members will learn a great lesson from his story, as well as be greatly entertained.”

In Abagnale’s third book, Stealing Your Life: The Ultimate Identity Theft Prevention Plan, he exposed the astonishing tactics of today’s identity theft criminals and offered powerful strategies to thwart them.

The Keynote is included free of charge in all registration packages, but advance registration is required.
